SACRO

In her latest ongoing project, SACRO, Lucia delves into the sacred. This work is a deep research into how religion, cults, and belief systems have shaped Western art and culture. She deliberately engages with the techniques of the 1600s, allowing historical echoes to resonate through a contemporary perspective that questions what endures and what its meaning is for us now.

SACRO: I QUATTRO CAVALIERI DELL’APOCALISSE, CHIESA ST.ANGELO, MONOPOLI
19.3.26 – 17.4.26
curated by: Patricia Friedrich

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse forms part of the inaugural works of Friedrich’s ongoing series Sacro. Conceived as an in situ installation within a sacred architectural site, the exhibition initiates Friedrich’s sustained exploration of the sacred—not through a formalized theological framework, but as an inquiry into recurring cultural and existential conditions. Friedrich’s practice unfolds as a long-term investigation of the human condition. In Sacro, she bridges past and present, tracing centuries of Western Mediterranean history through religious iconography while engaging with contemporary realities. Rather than reproducing devotion, the series interrogates it, asking: what is sacred today? To which forces do we offer reverence, or surrender in fear?
The present work draws directly from the Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, traditionally attributed to Saint John the Apostle, writing in exile on Patmos. In Revelation 6:1–8, the Lamb of God opens the first four of the Seven Seals, summoning four riders mounted on white, red, black, and pale horses. Commonly interpreted as Conquest, War, Famine, and Death, the Horsemen emerge as harbingers of divine judgment preceding the Last Judgment itself. (…) Text: Patricia Friedrich
